Desirable Smith & Wesson .357 Registered Magnum Double Action Revolver with Box, Registration Certificate, and Factory Letter Manufactured in 1935, the first year of production, this is a very fine example of the iconic Smith & Wesson Registered Magnum revolver in the longest barrel length offered. Roy Jinks notes in a 2010 article for the Smith & Wesson Collectors Association Journal that only 677 of these Registered Magnums were produced with a 8 3/4 inch barrel like this example. These highly tuned, highly finished, special order revolvers were one of the finest handguns available at the time, leading many into the hands of law enforcement, but also leading to high production costs which eventually brought an end to the Registered Magnum program in 1939-1940. The included factory letter with this example, Reg. # 572, lists it with an 8 3/4 inch barrel, blue finish, magna grips, a McGivern gold bead front sight, a square notch rear sight, and sighted at 50 yards for a 6 o'clock hold with magnum ammunition when shipped to George E. Dunn in Houlton, Maine on 6 November 1935. The included reproduction registration certificate by Roy Jinks confirms that information. Also included are copies of the original order form, an invoice, and letters between George Dunn and Victor Wesson. The revolver has the standard Smith & Wesson markings as well as the matching serial number on the butt, rear face of the cylinder, in the ejector rod shroud, front face of the ejector star, and rear face of the yoke. The inside of the replacement right grip panel is numbered to a different gun. The inside of the left grip panel is hand-carved with "LC 1945". The registration number is on the crane, and the matching assembly number is marked on the frame and crane. It is fitted with a McGivern gold bead blade front sight, an adjustable notch rear sight, and a pair of checkered walnut magna grips with "S&W" monogram medallions at the tops. Includes an unnumbered correct factory box.

  • Condition: Exceptionally fine, retains 95% of the original blue finish and 80% of the original case colors on the hammer and trigger with some light wear on edges and high spots and a cylinder turn line. The grips are very good with some minor handling marks on the butts and a few minor flat spots on the otherwise well-defined checkering. Mechanically excellent. The box is very good with moderate wear.
