Taino. A large anthropomorphic scoop depicting the upper torso of an ancestor or deity. The facial features resemble those of Yucahu seen on Zemis. These include deep-set eyes and a wide mouth. Yucahu was the primary male god of fertility and planting. On the top of the head, a snuffing tray is depicted. The size of the scoop suggests it was used for the liberal distribution of a transcendent powder during large ritual events. Made of magnetite. Length 9”. Taino Culture c.600-1500AD. Dominican Republic. From the estate of Theador Gaster, U of F Professor of Religious History, Gainesville, Fl. Curated by Larry Roberts, author of "Taino Sculptures, Art of the Gods," "Taino Hallucinogenic Implements Inhaling the Cosmic Dust," and the newly released "Taino Zemis and Other Heads of State, Rediscovering Caribbean Art."
