CHIPPENDALE CHERRY TALL CHEST OF DRAWERS
New York or Connecticut, Late 18th Century
Extensive family history inscribed on the underside of the shell-carved drawer: "This case of drawers was made for my mother Lydia Cudworth soon after she came into this county (then a wilderness) in the Spring of 1798 and are the work of a mechanic who came into the town with his tools on his shoulders about that time and was made from the cherry growing on this our grounds. They were given to me by Mother before her death, which occurred December 1858, but did not come into my possession till 1879. After my death, they are to go to my daughter Lucy Ellis Balch if she survives me, if she has a daughter that survives her, then they are to go to her. If not then they are to be given to my granddaughter Clara Ellis Beach, and never to be disposed of except to some of my mothers descendants," signed "Lucy Cudworth Ellis, Syracuse, N.Y., Aug. 1879". Ogee and coved molded cornice above an arrangement of five small drawers. Five slightly graduated full-width thumb-molded drawers below. Bracket feet with an unusual cock's comb design. Old dry surface. Poplar and Eastern white pine secondary woods. Original brasses save for the ring pull on the carved drawer.

  • Provenance:
Descended through the Cudworth family of New York.
Marguerite Riordan, Stonington, Connecticut, February 14, 1996.
The Collection of Nancy & Larry Dickson.

    Reference:
A nearly identical tall chest, undoubtedly by the same hand, is illustrated in "The Magazine Antiques", February 1977, p. 254.

    Notes:
While scholarship would typically ascribe this piece to southeastern Connecticut, we know, because of the family history provided, it was made in New York. We can then surmise a New London County-trained cabinetmaker relocated to upstate New York but retained his old shop's craftsmanship. Norwich, New York was settled by inhabitants from Norwich, Connecticut, so it is possible the Cudworth family and the cabinetmaker already knew each other from Connecticut before they moved to New York.
  • Dimensions: Height 67.25". Width at cornice 40.25". Width at case 38". Maximum depth 18.5".
  • Condition: Lip repairs to at least four drawers. Restorations to feet, including the vertical sections of the two rear feet, which are replacements.

The absence of a condition report does not imply an object is free of defects. All items may have normal signs of age and wear commensurate with their age; these issues will likely not be mentioned in the condition report. Please contact Eldred's before the auction with any condition questions. Questions about condition will not be answered after purchase. Condition reports are provided as a courtesy, and we are not responsible for any errors or omissions. Important note on frames: Frames are not guaranteed to be in the same condition as they are in the item photograph. Due to handling and shipping, many frames, especially antique ones, are prone to losses. If you have questions about the condition of a frame, please contact us prior to the auction.
