Central Asia, Pakistan / India, Gandhara / Kushan, ca. 100 BCE – 400 CE. A finely modeled stucco head of the Buddha in meditative repose, the face displaying the classical Gandharan synthesis of Buddhist iconography and Hellenistic sculptural tradition. Gently arched brows flow into a straight nose above full lips set in a faint inward smile; stippled hair frames the brow and gathers toward the partially preserved ushnisha. The lime-based stucco retains a chalky pallor that emphasizes the refined modeling, originally from a larger figure or relief adorning a stupa or monastic complex. Size of head: 175" W x 2" H x 1.6" D (444.5 cm W x 5.1 cm H x 4.1 cm D).

Provenance: private Colorado, USA collection
