VERY FINE NESTOR CORRADI (ITALIAN/AMERICAN, C. 1810-1891), ATTRIBUTED, NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA MINIATURE PORTRAIT BRACELETS / CUFFS, watercolor, extremely-finely executed bust-length depictions of a man and woman, she wears a low-cut Empire-style dress and a short coiffure a la Titus hairstyle, he with a fashionable jacket and ruffled white cravat. The pair is housed in matching gold-filled bracelets with hinged clasps on the backside, the rear of the portraits having a window showing a lock of hair and fern on the lady's example, and just a fern on the man's. Both signed "Corradi f" (for fecit) with the addition of a small French-style crown in front of each sitter. Retains a note incorrectly attributing the works to Rosalba Carriera (Italian, 1673-1757). Housed in the original fitted tooled-leather case with gilt decoration and block printed fabric on the underside. Second quarter 19th century. 1 3/4" x 1 1/2" sight, each bracelet 2 3/8" x 2 5/8" OA.
Catalogue Note: Nestor Corradi (c.1810-1891) immigrated as a young man to America from Italy, and is recorded in New Orleans by 1837 as a "portrait and miniature painter" at 147 Old Levee St. in the French Quarter. By 1855 he's recorded in New York City as an artist where he would remain until his death in 1891.
It's almost certain that these are painted in the artist's first few years in American while he's living in New Orleans. Both of the sitters, particularly the lady, are either French immigrants or highly-influenced by the French and Creole culture of New Orleans.

  • Provenance:

Property from the estate of Malcolm Bradley, Richmond, VA.

  • Condition:

Excellent condition with very minor scattered wear; the glass on the rear of the example with the portrait of the lady with a flake/spall to the corner, other minor chips and flakes to the glass panels; the case with expected moderate wear.
