Scarce Civil War Era U.S. Contract E.G. Lamson & Co. Ball Repeating Saddle Ring Carbine A reported 1,002 Ball carbines were manufactured by Lamson & Co. of Windsor, Vermont, under a U.S. Government contract of 1864, and delivered in May of 1865, per "Flayderman's Guide, 9th Edition". These Ball carbines are still considered by collectors as a Civil War arm even though they were delivered directly after the end of the Civil War. The Ball carbine uses a seven-shot tubular magazine located underneath the barrel, similar to the Henry and subsequent Winchesters, and the action operates somewhat similar to the famous Spencer carbines. Fixed blade front and folding notch rear sight, saddle ring and bar mounted on the left of the receiver, magazine cut-off lever, walnut forearm and buttstock, and a steel crescent buttplate. The left side of the receiver is marked "E.G. LAMSON & CO./WINDSOR. VT./U.S./BALLS PATENT./JUNE 23, 1863./MAR. 15 1864".
