Catalogue note: Martin Johnson Heade was a celebrated American landscape painter, renowned for his views of marshes, haystacks, and exotic flora with hummingbirds. He was born into a merchant family in Lumberville, Buck's County, Pennsylvania. His earliest artistic training was with the Quaker minister and folk artist Edward Hicks. During the 1840s, Heade executed mostly portraits and the occasional landscape; he exhibited in Philadelphia in 1841; New York in 1843; and Cincinnati 1849. A FARM IN A VALLEY (ca. 1844) is the artist's first recorded landscape.
