STAUNTON, AUGUSTA CO., SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA WALNUT PEMBROKE / BREAKFAST TABLE WITH ARCHIBALD STUART ASSOCIATION, the rectangular top supporting two hinged leaves over a plain apron with pull-out lopers with wooden knobs to support the leaves, the whole resting on straight square legs with chamfered inner edges. Yellow pine secondary wood. Retains a stellar early, probably original finished surface. The top with small initials carved into the leaf reading possibly "RSB". Possibly the circle/shop of Gideon Morgan (1751-1830), Staunton, VA (MESDA craftsman #45750). Late 18th century. 28 1/4" HOA, 29 3/4" x 18" top closed, 29 3/4" x 32" top open.
Catalogue Note: According to family history as conveyed by the consignor, this piece had been a fixture in the Archibald Stuart House (built in 1791) for generations, most recently residing in the small dependency built in 1793 which Judge Archibald Stuart used as his law office.

  • Provenance:

Gifted to the current owner by a descendant of Archibald Stuart in 1979. The consignor's husband's family briefly lived in the small dependency which once acted as Stuart's law office.
Descended at Stuart House, Staunton, VA.

  • Condition:

Good original condition with typical moderate surface and usage wear; one corner of one leaf partially lost, the same leaf with a stable shrinkage crack near the hinged edge; the top with a repaired shrinkage separation between the two boards with an oak block attached to the underside for stabilization, the top appearing to have been removed and replaced (probably for this repair); one leg with a minor stress crack near the joint with the apron; one hinge with replaced screws, other screws missing.
