Early American Pattern Glass, also known simply as “pattern glass,” “pressed glass,” or “Victorian glass,” is pressed glass tableware and other items made during the Victorian Period (ca. 1850-1910) but only in America, mostly in matching patterns and designs. While the wealthy of that time would have used blown glass and china from abroad, these wares were used by the lower and growing middle class. The limited number of colors used was offset by nearly 1000 unique patterns that were often copied as glass factories came and went, some closing within mere years of opening particularly in the economically devastated South and Appalachia regions. In the 1930s they were commonly known as “Depression Glass,” and the trend eventually died out as new methods and styles replaced them in the late 1940s. Collectors now seek out pristine pieces both for their quality and for their place in the history of American arts and crafts during the tumultuous Civil War, Reconstruction, and Westward Expansion Periods.
