AMERICAN OPERATIONS IN NORTH AFRICA PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM
A fantastic North African Campaign photograph album compiled by Col. Allerton Cushman (1907-2006), an officer of the 7th Field Artillery Regiment which participated in the amphibious assault landing in Algeria as part of Operation Torch and later fighting across North Africa. The album contains over 300 5 x 4 in. b/w photographs showing a huge range of images including: infantry making for the front; field emplacements; French Foreign Legionnaires and cavalrymen; Souk el Kemis; Pichon; ruins about Sbeitla; smashed Italian armor in Gafsa; crashed German aircraft and graves dug for the crew; Faid Pass, Kairouan Pass with German armor advancing; panoramas of Ouesseltia Valley and wrecked armor there; the battle of Sbeitla and the American retreat; Patton taking command at El Kouif; destruction at Kasserine Pass; dive-bombing Stukas, and a great deal more. The photos are stapled to album pages in the margins with the images themselves unaffected. Cushman attended the Field Artillery School at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. He later saw combat in North Africa and later his regiment participated in the Operation Husky landing in Gela. It joined the 1st Infantry Division's assault of Omaha Beach, then fought across Europe to the Hurtgen Forest in Germany, participating in the Battle of the Bulge. Cushman earned the Silver Star and later commanded the 671st Tank Destroyer Battalion. A rare collection from a theater of the war rarely photographed.
