SCOTTISH PICTORIAL NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, wool on linen, five and one-half alphabet rows, followed by one and two one-half rows of initials divided by vertical lines that read, "JA IF WF AF JF JA / DA AA JR MA JF [HF?] AF MF JF JF BG AF J[F] I / CF AH HA JL MB [numerals] [A]F", signed "JULIA ANDERSON / AGED 10 YEARS 1839" in two rows, all segmented by horizontal bands of decorative stitching, lower fourth featuring more initials scattered amongst various pictorial motifs including peacocks, flowers, and other animals, encompassed by a floral border. Housed under glass in a modern frame. Dated 1839. 16 3/8" x 15 3/4" sight, 21 1/4" x 20 3/4" OA.
Catalogue Note: The identity of Julia Anderson is uncertain, but there were a few candidates from Scotland with little information available.
This includes Julia Anderson (1828-1907), who was born in Cortachy, Angus, Scotland to parents John Anderson and Isabel Findlay. She married John Dickson (1823-1900) on January 2, 1857 and had at least three boys. The couple is buried at Piper's Hillock Cemetery in Cortachy.
Another candidate is Julia Anderson (b.1829), who was born in Alyth, Perthshire, Scotland to parents James Anderson and Agnes Moir / Ramsay. It appears she may have married some time after 1861, and the 1851, 1861, and 1871 Scotland censuses for Alyth listed her occupation as a linen weaver.
