Jules Jürgensen was a Swiss watchmaking company established as a subsidiary of the Danish firm Urban Jürgensen & Sønner. The brand’s history dates back to 1740 when a partnership was formed between Jürgen Jürgensen and Isaac Larpent, but after Jürgen’s death in 1811 and his son Urban’s death in 1830 it gained significant independence (and its final name) when Jules Frederik Jürgensen moved to Switzerland in the 1830s to expand the family legacy. For over a century the company was known for high-quality timepieces, often utilizing movement parts from legendary suppliers like LeCoultre. However, ownership shifted to the United States in 1936, and by the 1970s, the Quartz crisis led to the end of traditional Swiss production. Under the ownership of Mort Clayman, assembly moved to the U.S. Virgin Islands to utilize Japanese movements and avoid import tariffs, but the company eventually ceased operations following Clayman’s death in 2010, though the rights were later reacquired by the parent Danish firm.
