Southeast Asia, Thailand, Ban Chiang culture, ca. 1000–300 BCE. A globular earthenware jar rising from a rounded body to a sharply everted, flaring rim, its profile carinated at the shoulder in the manner long associated with the prehistoric potters of northeast Thailand. The buff-to-orange terracotta is hand-built and burnished, mottled now with mineral deposits and earthen accretions accrued through long burial. A finely incised band of oblique notching encircles the shoulder, a restrained decorative gesture that reads as both rhythm and texture. Vessels of this form served the domestic and funerary needs of the Ban Chiang settlements, frequently interred alongside the dead as grave goods bearing offerings of food or drink. The unpretentious utility of its making, coupled with the warm patina of millennia, lends the jar a quiet archaeological eloquence. Size: 4" D x 3.8" H (10.2 cm D x 9.7 cm H).

The Ban Chiang archaeological site, in Thailand's Udon Thani province, was excavated in the 1970s and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. Its long occupation, spanning roughly the second millennium BCE into the early centuries CE, documents one of Southeast Asia's most important sequences of early agriculture, bronze, and iron metallurgy. The painted red-on-buff wares of the late period are the culture's signature, but earlier and undecorated burnished vessels such as this carinated jar reflect the everyday ceramic tradition that underpinned the settlement's mortuary practices, in which whole pots and pottery fragments were placed with the dead.
