Antique World War II U.S. Kelvin & Wilfrid O. White Co. Navy Standard Pelorus
1945. American
This piece of military maritime history is an authentic, World War II-era U.S. Navy Standard Pelorus (Mark III, Mod 1), manufactured by the legendary nautical instrument firm Kelvin & Wilfrid O. White Co. in Boston. This instrument was a vital tool used by officers and navigators on the bridge of American naval vessels to measure relative bearings and cross-reference coastal landmarks or celestial objects. The heavy-duty, liquid-filled instrument features an iconic 7½-inch illuminated dial. It is mounted within an integrated brass gimbal ring system designed to remain perfectly level amid the pitch and roll of rough ocean waves. This complete estate assembly is preserved alongside its original protective domed black metal hood and dual, heavy-duty fitted wooden boxes featuring their original green-felt protective cushioning pads. The storage case retains its original, crisp brass data specification plate, reading: "Bureau of Ships, U.S. Navy, Mark III, Mod 1 Standard Pelorus, 7½ Inch Illuminated Dial, N 7198, NXsx-99168 (Dated to 1945), Kelvin & Wilfrid O. White Co., Boston, MA."
**Provenance: This piece features an interior presentation label documenting its donation by Captain Milton F. Jones, P (Past Commander), to the Fort Lauderdale Power Squadron on September 11, 1994, tracing its history directly to South Florida.

  • Dimensions: Box: H: 11 1/2" W: 12" D:11 1/2" / Pelorus: H: 8 5/8" Diameter: 11"
