Honduras. Ulua Valley region, ca. 600 - 800 CE. Carved white marble tapered cylindrical vase depicting the Maya god Chac, of rain, thunder, and lightning, having large angular flanges decorated with a low relief carved loop design, wearing a wide banded headdress with a faux woven pattern with two small round eyes and a bird of prey hooked beak in the front center, tied in the back with an incised bow. High relief sculpted facial features with a large angular nose wearing a nose ornament, perforated lug type mouth and another between his eyes. Eyes surrounded by high relief eye brows. A very rare and beautiful example. Size: 7.63”H x 6”W (19.4 x 15.2cm) with flanges.

Provenance: NYC. collection; Ex. Edward H. Merrin Gallery, Inc., NYC., 1980’s - 1990’s. Ex. Private Chicago and Florida collections, 1950’s.
