ROYAL REGIMENT OF FUSILIERS BEARSKIN PARADE CAP
Scarce ca.1940s Royal Regiment of Fusiliers bearskin parade cap, 18 in. tall with red over white hackle, brass chain link chin strap, 'brass 'flaming bomb' insignia fitted to the front, and leather liner. Some of the blue enamel behind the lettering on the insignia is lost, the chin cord is oxidized in places with the leather backing starting to loosen at extreme ends, and the hackle a bit soiled and frazzled, else generally very good. The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers is one of the few British Army regiments authorized to wear the iconic bearskin cap. Worn primarily by officers and band members for ceremonial duties, and is distinct from the smaller raccoon-skin 'Fusilier cap' historically worn by other ranks. Officer caps are made from high-quality Canadian brown bear fur that is dyed black. While originally worn in battle by elite grenadier units, today these caps are strictly reserved for full-dress, ceremonial, and parade uniform occasions. SOLD WITH: an unrelated but equally interesting piece, the metal protective cannister used to safely store and transport such a cap. This particular example is named to 'J. U. F. C. ALEXANDER' in worn white lettering upon the top. This could only be Sir James Ulick Francis Canning Alexander (often recorded as J.U.F.C. Alexander), a prominent British military leader and court official. Born on February 10, 1889, he was a senior officer in the Coldstream Guards. He served with distinction on the Western Front in France and Belgium during World War I, notably holding the vital position of Adjutant for the 1st Battalion of the Coldstream Guards during the opening months of the war in 1914. For his gallant and valuable services, he was decorated with the OBE and mentioned in dispatches. Ater his military service, he transitioned into the British royal household, serving as Keeper of the Privy Purse and Treasurer to King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II from 1936 to 1952. The black-painted tin container stands 22.5 in. tall and is 13.5 in. in diameter. It has a swing-open door on two hinges which is ribbed for added strength, and is fitted with a large working hasp. A steel handle is fitted to the top. Paint is worn, a few dents to the body, else very good.
