THEOPHILUS H. HOLMES
(1804 - 1880) Confederate lieutenant general, commander of the Trans-Mississippi Department who failed in his key task of defending the Confederacy's hold on the Mississippi River. Rare, good military content and association war-date A.L.S., 1p. 4to., Goldsboro, NC, June 17, 1862, to North Carolina governor HENRY T. CLARK (1808-1874). In full: ‘If it will meet your approbation and I can procure arms for them I will be glad if your excy [excellency] will order the two Regts now in Raleigh to Goldsboro where I will put them under the command of Col [James] Deshler an able Officer who will organize and prepare them for service much better and in less time than it can be effected at Raleigh. After the receipt of your excy letter I wrote to Genl [William R.] Ter[ry] an excuse for not sending them to Petersburgh. [sic]' He signs ‘Th H Holmes' in black ink at the conclusion, adding his rank ‘Maj Genl Cmg Dept [of North Carolina]'. Silked for preservation, faintly toned at the edges and with a mounting strip remnant to the left edge on the verso. Otherwise in very good overall condition. Colonel Deshler would be killed by a Union shell at Chickamauga, his proposed promotion to Brigadier General remaining unconfirmed.
