Pre-World War II Colt Super .38 Semi-Automatic Pistol with Reshaped Grip Frame, 7 Inch Barrel, and Factory Letter Originally manufactured in 1932, this desirable pre-World War II Colt .38 Super pistol was modified during the period of use to a long-barrel target configuration. These Super .38 pistols were first shown to the public at the August 1928 Camp Perry National Matches and were available for purchase by the start of 1929. This particular example had its grip frame reshaped to a revolver style shape/configuration and a longer barrel installed, likely for competition shooting. The included factory letter lists the pistol in .38 Super caliber with a 5 inch barrel, blue finish, and grips not listed when shipped to W.H. Hoegee Company in Los Angeles, California, on 13 February 1932 as one of three guns of its type in the shipment. The left side of the slide is marked with the two-line address and patent dates, while the right side bears the model/caliber marking along with the Rampant Colt. The serial number is on the right of the frame. The left of the trigger guard is marked "W" over "VP", and the right is marked "60". The blued barrel is marked "38 SUPER" on the chamber hood. It is fitted with blade and notch rear sights, wide checkered hammer, long grip safety, arched smooth mainspring housing, smooth plastic grips, and a blued magazine with modified baseplate to correctly index with the altered grip frame shape.
