Russian Icon
Tikhvin 'Mother of God'

Russian 20th century icon in metal oklad in the style of the late 19th century. Tradition relates that the original Tikhvin icon was in Constantinople, but disappeared and in 1383 was seen in the air above Lake Ladoga in northern Russia by fishermen working their nets, and was later housed in a church built on the Tikhvinka River, thus its name. It became one of the most famous of the traditionally "wonderworking" Russian icon types.
The title inscription on the icon is in a colloquial spelling.
