Biography from Nedra Matteucci Galleries: William Matthews was born in New York in 1949 and moved with his family to San Francisco in the late fifties. He received art training on the West Coast and spent two years in Los Angeles designing album covers before going to Europe.

Between 1975 and 1980, Matthews traveled throughout Spain, North Africa, Egypt, and Great Britain. His travels culminated in four catalogued exhibitions: Heart Land: Watercolors of the Amish, Mennonite and Shaker Villages (1996), China (1995), The Blue Nile (1993), and Sketches of Spain (1992). Since 1980 he has lived in the mountains outside Denver, where he pursues painting full time.

Matthews credits the watercolorists of San Francisco and his mother as his earliest influences. He traces additional influences to other U.S. watercolorists, English painters, John Sell Cotman and Richard Bonington, and to Hercules B. Brabazon as well as a variety of traditional Chinese artists. Matthews' watercolors depict Western subject matter in a style which one might describe as a subtle philosophical study of Western ranch life. Forbes has hailed him as the new Remington of U.S. painting.

His work has been widely exhibited nationally and is included in numerous private collections including those of the Ritz Carlton, Aspen, Colorado; the Gilman Paper Company, New York; Texaco, New York; and Warner Western Records, Nashville, Tennessee. Matthews' paintings are part of the permanent collections of the Gene Autry Heritage Museum, Los Angeles; the Buffalo Bill Historical Center and Museum, Cody, Wyoming; the National Cowboy Hall of Fame, Oklahoma City; and the Eiteljorg Museum, Indianapolis.
