HINTON R. HELPER
(1829 – 1909) American writer who served as an indentured servant in North Carolina before absconding with his employer's money and joining the California Gold Rush. Recurring to New York, he observed the economic imbalance between North and South, becoming a practical abolitionist and publishing ‘The Impending Crisis of the South, and How to Meet It' (1857), which was banned throughout the South. A.L.S. as U.S. consul to Argentina, 2pp. 8vo., Buenos Aires, Feb. 7, 1866, to U.S. Navy Captain Walker of the sloop USS SHAWMUT, asking whether an English friend can borrow a set of sailor's clothes for Carnival. He signs ‘H. R. Helper' in black ink at the conclusion, adding an interesting post-script: ‘...I have this moment been informed, whether truly or not, I cannot say, that one of your men was killed in this city last night, and that another is in prison. During the afternoon I shall special inquiry in reference to these rumors.' He signs again with his initials. Shows original mailing folds, mildly toned overall, otherwise in very good condition.
