NOBORU SAWAI (Japanese/Canadian, 1931-2017) "Honorable Curator" - Limited edition etching and woodblock print 94/100. Signed, titled and editioned lower right.. Unframed. 19.75 x 25.75 inches (image), 22 x 28.5 inches (paper). Excellent condition, never framed or mounted.

  • Dimensions: 19.75 x 25.75 inches (image), 22 x 28.5 inches (paper).
  • Medium: Limited edition etching and woodblock print 94/100
  • Notes: Noboru Sawai was born on Takamatsu, Japan in 1931 and went to study in the United States in 1950. However, he was struck by tuberculosis just after arriving and spent the next 9 years recovering. He eventually earned a MFA from the University of Minnesota in 1969. He then returned to Japan to study traditional woodblock printmaking at Hanga Academy in Tokyo, under revered printmaker Toshi Yoshida: "from this period my principle concern has been how I can synthesize the traditional method of executing Japanese woodcuts with the techniques of European (ie. Western) etchings, thus establishing an amalgam of two diverse cultures to the art of printmaking". He came to Canada in 1971 to teach at the art department at the University of Calgary, where he taught for 22 years. He established his own studio, Sawai Atelier, in Vancouver in 1981.
  • Condition: Excellent condition, never framed or mounted

All packing and shipping is done at the expense of the purchaser. If you are the successful bidder on one or more lots, you will receive an email directly from the auction house within 48 hours. Please then contact us to discuss your packing, shipping and pick-up preferences (and we can remove artworks from framing in order to ship without frame and glass). All artworks are located in Regina, Saskatchewan and are available for pick-up. Also, we are currently offering free delivery in Regina on invoices over $200, and occasional delivery trips are made to Saskatoon to hand-deliver to Saskatoon home addresses for a small fee when there is sufficient demand. We can pack and ship throughout Canada and internationally, or can deliver your artworks to a recognized international shipper for them to pack and ship via their direct communications with you. For US buyers, note that all Canadian and US artworks have been proceeding as tariff exempt under the terms of the Canada-US-Mexico Free Trade Agreement, but the situation can change. Artworks with a country of origin other than Canada, US or Mexico are more likely to have a tariff fee added by US Customs.
