ALEXANDRIA AND PETERSBURG, VIRGINIA RETAILED COIN SILVER SPOONS AND BUTTER KNIFE, LOT OF SIX, each having a personalized engraving to handle; comprising a "Josephine" butter knife by Gorham & Co. / Gorham Mfg. Co. of Providence, RI and retailed by William Wallace Adam of Alexandria, VA (active c.1831-1877) with partially worn "[LM?]B" initials; a pair of tablespoons by Theo. Evans & Co. of New York City, NY (1855-1865) and retailed by Thomas Nowlan of Petersburg (1848-1861) and Richmond, VA (1865-1901), each having a forward-tipped fiddle handle with "F" initial, one with a legible date mark for 1857; and a set of three teaspoons by James Watts of Philadelphia, PA (1832-1888) and retailed by James Thomas Young of Petersburg, VA (1854-1890+), each having a forward-tipped fiddle handle with an "O" initial. Each with a retailer's mark, spoons with maker's marks, butter knife with "PATENT 1855" mark, teaspoons and knife also marked "COIN". Total weight: 5.915 ozt. Second half 19th century. 5 1/2" to 8 7/8" LOA.

  • Condition:

    Mostly in good to very good overall condition with some wear, surface scratches, and other imperfections including nicks, slight bending, and/or a few or more dents to bowls; butter knife with slight worn spots to raised decoration and wear to engraving; one tablespoon with a sizable dent or bending to bowl near terminal of handle.
