18th Century
Miniature mourning painting on ivory behind glass in a 14kt gold setting. Painting depicts a figure resting against an urn-topped monument with a script monogram on base. Etched "Nicholas & Ann Gilman March & April 1783".

  • Provenance: Notes:
    Colonel Nicholas Gilman was in command of the Fourth New Hampshire Regiment during the Revolutionary War. Prior to the war, he had been a shipbuilder and merchant. He had eight children with Ann Gilman, and the couple died within three weeks of each other in the spring of 1783.
  • Dimensions: Length 1".
