MODEL 1861 CONTRACT RIFLE-MUSKET BY E. ROBINSON
A scarce U.S. Model 1861 percussion rifle-musket in .58 caliber, 31.75 in. barrel, 47.75 in. overall. The lockplate bears the manufacturer's rollmark ‘E. Robinson New York' ahead of a federal eagle over ‘U. S.', with the manufacturing date ‘1864' behind the hammer. The top of the breech end of the barrel is marked with the barely-legible date ‘1864', while the barrel face below bears the proof marks ‘V' over ‘P' over an eagle's head. The left-hand barrel flat is marked with a star and the initials ‘L. L. [possibly E] M.' The two extant barrel bands are marked with the letter ‘U', and the top tang of the buttplate is marked ‘U. S.'; no further markings or cartouches to the stock are visible. The action cocks and fires crisply, while the bore shows very little extant rifling at the muzzle. The metal components show a brown finish overall, with scattered patches of pitting. The screws retaining the lockplate appear to be later replacements. The barrel has been cut short from its original length, and the stock has been cut back to the second barrel band. The stock shows two tight 2 in. cracks before the front tang of the trigger guard, with expected handling marks and dings overall. The original sights have been removed and replaced with a rather crude, soldered-on fixed notch rear sight and blade front sight. An appropriate ramrod is present, secured beneath the barrel by the barrel bands. NRA grade just good, estimated accordingly. This firm produced approx. 30,000 Model 1861 rifle-muskets under U.S. Government contract during the Civil War. Antique/black powder, no FFL or C&R required.
