AMERICAN CIVIL WAR FOLK ART CARVED PRESENTATION CANE, walnut, the grip carved in the form of a clenching fist over a plain tapered shaft up which curls a snake. At the top of the cane below the fist a plaque reads "Presented by Thos. Blasland Co. J. / 15th Mass. Vols. To Mr. Albert Day" Jr. / As a mark of esteem for the familey [sic] / Taken from the battlefield of Antietam / Sept 1862." opposite the plaque an inlaid ornamentation is missing. Retains the original metal tip and the likely original finished surface. Circa 1862. 37" LOA.
Catalogue Note: Thomas Blasland (Massachusetts, 1830-1863), Corporal Co. 1, 15th Mass. Regiment fought a number of pivotal battles in the Civil War including Ball's Bluff, Fair Oaks, and Antietam. His wounds at the latter required hospitalization, but he still died relatively shortly thereafter. His obituary reads, in part, "He was wounded at Antietam and was sent into hospital, hoping to be able soon to rejoin his regiment and share with his comrades its toils and dangers. But it was not to be, though his wounds healed, disease fastened upon him and only four weeks since he obtained a brief furlough at Point Lookout to visit his friends and come home but to die, consumption finished the work which a rebel bullet commenced."
Sadly, we could not nail down the identity of Albert Day Jr. It's possibly that it was intended to be Davis (Day with a " near the end) and there was an Albert Davis in the same regiment as Blasland, though he was not a Jr.

  • Condition:

Very good overall condition with scattered minor to moderate surface wear; one inlaid decoration missing.
