An exceptional opportunity awaits numismatists and collectors of American history with this robust lot of twenty-five pre-1969 Kennedy Half Dollars, each a testament to a pivotal era in U.S. coinage. These cherished pieces are notably composed of 40% silver, a distinctive characteristic of the half dollars minted between 1965 and 1970, making them highly desirable for their intrinsic metal value and historical significance. Each coin in this collection offers a tangible connection to the legacy of one of America's most iconic presidents.

The genesis of the Kennedy Half Dollar design is a compelling tale born from national mourning. Following President John F. Kennedy's tragic assassination in November 1963, there was an immediate and overwhelming public demand for a coin to commemorate his profound impact. Mint Director Eva Adams, with the support of Jacqueline Kennedy, swiftly initiated the creation of a new half dollar, bypassing the customary five-year waiting period for design changes. Chief Engraver Gilroy Roberts skillfully adapted his existing presidential inaugural medal design for the obverse, depicting a dignified profile of Kennedy. For the reverse, Frank Gasparro designed the majestic Presidential Seal, featuring an eagle clutching an olive branch and arrows, encircled by stars. Jacqueline Kennedy personally approved these designs, leading to the coin's rapid release in March 1964. While the initial 1964 issue was 90% silver, the subsequent years, including those represented in this lot, transitioned to a 40% silver clad composition due to rising silver prices, ensuring these coins remain a significant part of American numismatic heritage.
