Exceptional Colt Model 1855 Full-Stock Military Percussion Revolving Rifle Samuel Colt's revolving handguns remain his most famous firearms, but his first product was the First Model "ring lever" revolving rifle produced in 1837. When his firearms business was revived in 1847 with the Walker, handguns remained the focus for several years, but Colt soon looked to add revolving rifles to his line. His "New Model Revolving Rifle" was produced in several variations c. 1855-1864, but only around 18,300 were produced. Of these, only 800 were the .56 caliber Military Rifles with 31 3/16 inch barrels per the data on page 183 of "The Book of Colt Firearms" by Wilson. These .56 caliber rifles had the largest frame size of all the Model 1855 long guns and were one of the few viable repeating rifle designs at the outbreak of the Civil War, and some were used by Union soldiers, including the famous Berdan Sharpshooters. The rifle features a blade front sight with block base that serves as the lug for mounting a socket bayonet, a three-leaf rear sight, "COL. COLT HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." marked in the top strap groove, "PATENTED SEPT. 10th 1850" in one of the cylinder flutes, "COLT'S PATENT/Nov. 24th 1857" on the left side of the frame, K" on the left side of the trigger guard, the matching serial number "2410" visible on the bottom of the frame and the lower tang as well as the toe of the buttplate, sling swivels on the rear barrel band and buttstock, brass forend cap, rifle-musket length forearm, straight wrist stock with steel buttplate, and cleaning rod in the stock compartment.
