HENRY W. LONGFELLOW
(1807-1882) American poet and author whose works include 'The Song of Hiawatha', 'The Psalm of Life' and 'Paul Revere's Ride.' Fantastic, unique pen and ink drawing by Longfellow with an additional A.Q.S. beneath, his drawing of a huge chestnut tree with a blacksmith's shed, a plow and wagon beneath it, and a few other trees in the distance. Beneath the sketch Longfellow writes and initials the opening two lines of his most famous poem, 'The Village Blacksmith', in full: 'Under a spreading chestnut tree The village smithy stands H.W.L. 1880'. Sketch and text are in brown-black ink on an octavo sheet, with some light soiling in margin areas. There is a small ink-eroded hole in the center of the tree's branches, easily mended or much less noticeable if backed in black, some old ink scribbling on verso affecting nothing, else very good.
