CONFEDERATE GENERALS JAMES JAY ARCHER AND JOHN W. FRAZER
A fine association manuscript D.S. by two notable Confederate generals, 1p. 4to., [n.p.], Nov. 30, 1859, a return for back rations due to JOHN W. FRAZER (1827-1906), American soldier, planter, and businessman, and an Army career officer who later served as a Confederate brigadier general. He signs ‘J. W. Frazer' in black ink beneath the account, with his rank executed in another hand. Below, the return is approved by JAMES JAY ARCHER (1817-1864), Confederate brigadier general, took part in every battle of the Army of Northern Virginia from the Seven Days to Gettysburg, where he and a large part of his command were captured. Imprisoned for more than a year at Johnson's Island, he died in Richmond shortly after being exchanged. He signs ‘J J Archer' in black ink. Frazer's signature is slightly light and shows some ink bleeding, with old folds and toned at the edges, otherwise in very good condition overall.
