East Asia, Japan, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A woven ikebana basket and a hyotan (double gourd) vessel, traditionally associated with storing and carrying sake or seeds and also valued as a good luck charm for display. The basket is woven from cane and fitted with a rustic stick handle, creating an organic silhouette suited to flower arrangement or decorative use. The gourd is tied with red silk tasseled cords and fitted with a carved bone peg stopper in the form of mushrooms. Size of basket: 5.5" W x 9.25" H (14 cm x 23.5 cm)

Provenance: private Denver, Colorado, USA collection, acquired in the 1960's

  • Condition: Fading and discoloration to red tassel from age, with some minor fraying to fibers, but gourd it otherwise intact. Basket has some minor wear to protruding ends of cane and high pointed areas on handle. Minor pressure fissures on the handle.
