  • Notes: Louis de Niverville was born in 1933 in England to Canadian parents, and the family moved to Montreal, Quebec before he was two. At the age of six he was hospitalized for over four years due to spinal tuberculosis, and he later attributed the fantastic nature of his artwork to his fantasizing during this period. In 1953 the family moved to Ottawa, Ontario where, while still in high school Niverville designed posters and stage sets for the Ottawa Little Theatre Company. In 1957 he moved to Toronto to work as a freehand illustrator then for six years worked at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. He then turned to art making full-time, including creating murals in several Ontario cities and exhibiting his paintings throughout Canada. He moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1988 and would remain there until moving to Oakville, Ontario, in 2005. Niverville's work was featured in many solo shows including a 1978 retrospective of his paintings which travelled to thirteen Canadian cities including the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Today his work can be found in such public collections as Art Gallery of Hamilton, Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto), Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa) and McMaster Museum of Art (Hamilton). Louis de Niverville died in 2019 in Oakville, Ontario.
