CONFEDERATE GENERALS WILLIAM HENRY FITZHUGH LEE AND WADE HAMPTON
A fine pair of signed endorsements executed by two notable Confederate generals on a war-date letter, 1p. oblong 8vo., [n.p.], Nov. 3, 1864, from a Maj. R. H. Downman, requesting a detail of four men to procure a lot of cattle to provision his cavalry division. The request is first endorsed on the verso by the division's commander, WILLIAM HENRY FITZHUGH LEE (1837 – 1891), Confederate major general of cavalry and son of R.E. Lee who fought at Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, and surrendered at Appomattox. He executes his A.E.S. in black ink, in full: ‘Hd Qrs Cav Div Nov 3rd 1864 Res[pectfully] forwd [forwarded with the request that I may be allowed to send 4 men as desired,' signing ‘W H F Lee' and adding his rank ‘Maj Gen'. The request is next endorsed by WADE HAMPTON (1819 - 1902) Confederate lieutenant general of cavalry whose daring exploits at Antietam, Gettysburg, and Petersburg won him fame in both North and South, who signs his full name in black ink. The request is finally endorsed as approved by order of Gen. Robert E. Lee and signed by his aide-de-camp, Col. WALTER H. TAYLOR (1838-1916). The former Lee's endorsement and signature are rather light, and the piece shows a horizontal fold and is ragged at the bottom edge from the endorsements, otherwise in very good condition overall.
