Exceptional Merwin, Hulbert & Co. Pocket Army Single Action Revolver Manufactured from 1876 into the 1880s, this is an exceptional example of the Merwin, Hulbert & Co. large frame Pocket Army single action revolver, which combined an incredibly attractive and technologically advanced design with expert machining and immense functionality. The precise machining utilized in the manufacture of these revolvers is evident in handling one, with this particular example exhibiting the "cylinder pin suction" which is often seen on these Merwin revolvers, a clear indication of extremely skilled hand-fitting. These revolvers were arguably some of the finest available to consumers in the American West but, like so many other designs from various manufacturers, they were simply out-marketed and out-produced by Colt's "Peacemaker". The left side of the barrel is marked with the standard two-line Hopkins & Allen address and patent dates. The right of the frame has the two-line Merwin, Hulbert & Co. address and the model marking, while the left of the frame has the "CALIBRE/WINCHESTER 1873" marking designation for .44-40 W.C.F., meaning that this revolver would have been an excellent sidearm to pair with Winchester's "gun that won the West" in the same caliber. The serial number is on the lower right of the butt, and the matching assembly number "3524" is marked on the left of the grip frame, rear face of the cylinder, and rear face of the barrel lug. It is fitted with a blade front sight, frame-top groove rear sight, and a pair of checkered hard rubber grips.
