Taino Collar or belt featuring an owl’s head on both sides of the collar. Owls were shamanic allies. At the top of the collar is a bird-man with an exceptionally long beak. Bird-men were considered caciques or shaman priests because they controlled the distribution of hallucinogens. These would have included cohoba, mushrooms, tobacco, and other psychoactive drugs. Bird-men, as metaphorical envoys, communicated with the deities and ancestors under the influence of entheogens. On top of the owl’s head is the familiar icon of interfacing bird heads. This symbol is repeated on the bottom panel of the collar. The stone is darkly banded, fine-grained, with a large quartz inclusion to one side. Just below the beak and to one side is an aged impurity. It has a warm, softly worn surface. Length: 20 inches. Taino Culture c. 600-1500 AD Dominican Republic. Purchased from NYC Pre-Columbian dealer Daniel Pucara, by Miami collector Alfredo Carrada.
