JAPANESE PROPELLER RELIC FROM TARAWA
Good relic from the hard-fought Battle of Tarawa, Nov. 20-23, 1943 between the United States and Japan on Tarawa Atoll in the Gilbert Islands. Nearly 6,400 Japanese, Koreans, and Americans died during the battle, mostly on and around the small island of Betio, in the extreme southwest of Tarawa Atoll, where the Japanese fought almost to the last man. Offered here is a 4.75 x 2 in. section sawn from the tip of a Japanese aircraft's propeller with one side painted brown, the others unfinished. One side bears the contemporary calling card of Lt. J.G. Leo Tuburski, USNR affixed to it with very aged cello tape. The card bears period handwriting reading: 'Part of [?, worn] Tarawa! Nice for paper weight or rings etc. Leo' A later note in ink on another side reads: 'JAP PROPELLER TARAWA'. Very good.
