Herbie Rose (1930-2017) Jamaican/American, Harbor Scene Watercolor on Paper. Depicts a sailboat tied up at a dock with a small house in a tropical port behind it. Signed bottom right.

Overall Size: 17 x 21 in.

Sight Size: 10 1/2 x 14 in.

Herbert “Herbie” Rose (1930-2017) was born in Port Antonio, Jamaica, and was encouraged from a young age by his mother to pursue art, teaching himself to paint vibrant landscapes and genre scenes by age thirteen and gaining a patron who supported him with financial stability. In 1950 he traveled to New York, graduating cum laude from the New York Phoenix School of Design and taking additional courses at the Pratt Institute while working night shifts at Sloan Kettering Institute, experiences that influenced his artistic vision. He gained recognition for his mastery of light and color, particularly in depicting Manhattan streets, and worked in commercial art for companies like Colgate Palmolive, Texaco, and Hertz before returning to Jamaica to manage his parents’ bar and restaurant as well as opening a home gallery. He painted primarily in oil and acrylic, and later studied watercolors under John Pike in Woodstock, New York, which inspired him to teach. In the 1980s he moved to Bradenton, Florida, teaching at Ringling College of Art and Design and the Manatee Art League, and became a driving force in the Village of the Arts revitalization by opening the Rose Giles Gallery with his second wife, Graciela Giles, remaining a central figure in the local arts community until his death.
