This late 19th-century Wedgwood pedestal ewer is crafted from fine earthenware, commonly referred to as Queensware. The vessel features an ovoid body supported by a circular pedestal foot, a flared rim with a defined spout, and an ornate, high-loop scrolled handle. The exterior is finished in a matte cream ground and decorated with two distinct hand-painted compositions. One side depicts a picturesque English cottage landscape with a thatched-roof house and a foreground of tall, vibrant hollyhocks in shades of pink and yellow. The reverse side features a delicate spray of pink poppies and blue wildflowers. The neck is embellished with a textured band in a bronzed-gold tone, flanked by gilt rings and accented with hand-painted blue foliate scrolls and gilt vine motifs. Heavy gilding is applied to the handle, rim, and base. The underside of the foot displays a red-brown printed factory mark with the Portland Vase symbol over the word WEDGWOOD. It also bears a circular black stamp for the Milkina Collection and multiple inventory labels, including one from Potomack Co. for Sale IT209, Lot 2298, and a descriptive label identifying the piece as a Large Queensware pitcher dating to circa 1880. This item is associated with the Rubin Collection.
