Philadelphia: William S. & Alfred Martien, 1863. 8vo, 40pp. Printed wrappers (light staining to wrappers and text). -- [BARNARD, Frederick Augustus Porter]. Letter to the President of the United States, by a Refugee. Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott & Co., 1863. Barnard, an American scientist and educator who later became the president of Columbia University, was a Unionist who lived in the South at the outbreak of the Civil War. As a result of his political views, he was forced to flee the Confederacy and become a "refugee" in the North.
