MATHIAS KAUAGE (Papua New Guinean, 1944-2003) The Woman is Carrying a Child (Meri Ikarim Pikmini Long Bus) - Limited edition screen print on heavy rag paper, 30/60. Signed lower right, titled lower centre, editioned lower left. 31.5 x 24 inches. Excellent condition.

  • Dimensions: 31.5 x 24 inches
  • Medium: Limited edition screen print on heavy rag paper, 30/60
  • Notes: Mathias Kauage was born in 1944 in the remote village of Miugu, Chimbu Province, Papua New Guinea, and had his first contact with white people when he was twelve years old. He was reportedly inspired to take up art-making while visiting an exhibition of the work of Timothy Akis in 1969. Kauage quickly developed skills in drawing, painting and woodcut printmaking, studying at the National Arts School (Port Moresby) and developed a distinctive, colourful visual style. Kauage's subject matter often dealt with the tensions of the stone-age life of his village and its traditional culture and the quickly changing modern world of technology, diversity and Christian teachings. In 1998, Kauage was awarded the Order of the British Empire for services to the arts. The National Gallery of Australia has described him as "Papua New Guinea's best-known contemporary artist" and his work was exhibited around the world during his lifetime. Mathias Kauage died in 2003 in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.

All packing and shipping is done at the expense of the purchaser. If you are the successful bidder on one or more lots, you will receive an email directly from the auction house within 48 hours. All artworks are located in Regina, Saskatchewan and are available for pick-up. Also, we are currently offering free delivery in Regina on invoices over $200, and occasional delivery trips are made to Saskatoon to hand-deliver to Saskatoon home addresses for a small fee when there is sufficient demand. We can pack and ship throughout Canada and internationally, or can deliver your artworks to a recognized international shipper for them to pack and ship via their direct communications with you. For US buyers, note that all Canadian and US artworks have been proceeding as tariff exempt under the terms of the Canada-US-Mexico Free Trade Agreement, but the situation can change. Artworks with a country of origin other than Canada, US or Mexico are more likely to have a tariff fee added by US Customs.
