JOHN TAYLOR, RICHMOND, VIRGINIA BELL METAL / BRONZE POSNET, deep, circular pot with molded outer rim, and integral, angled tapering handle intaglio stamped "TAYLOR * RICHMOND" to top, the whole raised on three full-height tapered legs each having five panels to the outer face. Retains an old polished surface. 1790-1810. 8 3/4" HOA, 6" H rim, 16 1/2" LOA, 7 1/2" D rim.
Catalogue Note: John Taylor emigrated from Liverpool, England around 1790. He placed a number of advertisements in Richmond, VA newspapers during the last decade of the 18th and first decade of the 19th century. His first ad ran in The Virginia Gazette and General Advertiser on August 3, 1791, where he announced that he "has begun a BRASS and PEWTER Foundry in this city, near the court house..." Another ad published July 14, 1793 lists many articles Taylor has for sale of his own manufactory including "bell-metal skillets" and "Bells of all sizes, from 2 oz. to 500 lbs weight, made to suit any purpose." The Enquirer, Richmond, April 26, 1811 published an announcement of an auction on May 1 of property belonging to the estate of John Taylor including "A negro man who is an excellent coppersmith & blacksmith."
Taylor produced posnets in at least two sizes of which a small number of examples are known to survive including examples in the MESDA collection (2016.3) and the Bayou Bend Collection, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (B.2010.10).

  • Condition:

    Excellent overall condition, possibly early brazed repair to lower handle; some minor as-made flaws mostly to the body, with a likely as-made closed crack to the interior base (which is water tight).
