    Other notes:
The present work is a fragment from a larger illustration Koerner created for Zane Gray's story "Sunset Pass" published in the 1928 issue of The American Magazine. The story of "Sunset Pass" tells the tale of Ash Preston, a young rancher who returns to his family's ranch in Arizona after years away. There he discovers that corruption, greed, and cattle rustling threaten both the ranch and the surrounding community. While attending a masquerade ball Preston encountered a masked individual seen in the present work, and the men fought. In the remaining portion of the scene, Preston is thrown against an adobe wall near a niche decorated with a painted pot. The magazine caption reads, "He cared nothing for Preston's sudden blows. He broke through them, beat him back, and knocked him against the wall." The full artwork from which this fragment was taken, was signed and dated "W.H.D. Koerner / 1928."

This lot is accompanied by a copy of a portion of the story in the publication mentioned above, which includes an illustration of this work.
