1919 AEF SIBERIA ID BRACELET
An unusual World War I relic: a brown leather strap bracelet measuring 8.75 in. with a pin/tang fastener, bearing a 1.75 x .8 in. silver ID tag at middle identifying the wearer as ‘Frank R. Keller, A.E.F. Dental Corps, US Army, Siberia'. Date at top reads 1919. Light wear to band, light tarnish to tag, overall very good. The American Expeditionary Force, Siberia, operated as part of an allied intervention from 1918-1920 during the Russian Civil War. The alleged diplomatic objective of this expedition was to rescue 40,000 men of the Czechoslovak Region held by Bolshevik forces as they attempted to make their way along the Trans-Siberian Railroad to Vladivostok, and it was hoped, eventually to the Western Front. However, Woodrow Wilson, generally had the military objective to quash any Cossack or Japanese designs on critical railroad lines and rich resources of the Siberian region. While the AEF Siberia was in operation, the concurrent Polar Bear Expedition landed Arkhangelsk, Russia, to fight the Red Army from September 1918-July 1919. By most accounts, American interventions in Russia failed; more so, some considered them little more than ‘a military crime' (Peyton C. March, Chief of Staff 1918-1921).
