[Early Photography]. A selection of 25 photos with Civil War, sports, and photographic interest.

25 images, the majority being stereoviews on cardstock mounts by various photographers and publishers, including Mathew Brady/ E. & H.T. Anthony (New York), Anderson (Richmond, VA), and B.W. Kilburn (Littleton, NH). Conditions overall good, with occasional soiling, toning, and edge and corner wear to mounts.

Stereoviews include: "View of Ft. Sumter from the sand-bar." New York: E. & H.T. Anthony (chip/damage to top edge of mount and print). -- "Woods on the left wing, Battle of Gettysburgh [sic]; in the middle ground a dead soldier." New York: E. & H.T. Anthony. -- "Ruins of Rail Road Bridge at Blackburns Ford, Va." New York: E. & H.T. Anthony. -- A.T. Stewart's Store, Broadway. New York: S.C. Northrop. Note Brady's Gallery at right. Uncredited -- "Georgetown, from Camp Cameron. A view of exquisite beauty," including the 7th NYSM. New York: E. & H.T. Anthony. -- Signal Tower, Cobb's Hill, Appomattox River, Va. New York: E. & H.T. Anthony. -- "Gymnastic Field Sports of the Gallant 7th. The Human Pyramid." New York: E. & H.T. Anthony. -- Stereoview of a Civil War-era Sanitary Fair display, with the Gatling Gun on display. Uncredited. -- "Libby Prison." Richmond, VA: Selden & Co. -- "Exchange and Ballard" (Richmond and vicinity). Richmond, VA: Anderson. Note the buildings draped in mourning in honor of Lincoln. -- "Our Trip to the Mines, Ouray, Col., U. S. A." Littleton, NH: B.W. Kilburn. 2 views showing the Kilburn brothers, photographers, with a camera visible at lower left. -- "Camping Out, Col." Littleton, NH: Kilburn Brothers. This view features geologist Dr. Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden seated with fellow scientists. There is also a Black man standing off to the side, likely acting as an attendant to the members of the party.

CDV, outdoor view of a group of Native American basket weavers in and near their tent, with what appears to be a photographer's wagon visible at right. Uncredited. -- CDV, standing portrait of mustachioed man, possibly famed boxer John C. Heenan. New York: Charles D. Fredricks & Co. -- 5 unmounted albumen prints showing jockeys posed with their horses. Uncredited (toning, fading, significant edge and corner wear to prints). -- Cabinet card, studio portrait of baseball player, C.H. Willis, pitcher for the Omaha Omahogs, copyrighted in the negative, "1889, Goodwin & Co., NY" (toning, soiling, some surface loss to mount verso). -- CDV, which appears to show a group of men, some armed. St. Albans, VT: Richardson's Photograph Gallery. Modern tag furnished by consignor suggests that the image shows members of the Canadian militia during the Fenian Raid into Canada, although this cannot be confirmed (image heavily worn, with significant toning, soiling, fading to print, vertical crease through print and mount, significant edge and corner wear to mount). -- 2 1/2 x 4 in. photograph on cardstock mount showing a public gathering of some sort. Uncredited (print and mount edge and corners trimmed). -- 2 silver gelatin photographs, 4 x 4 1/2 in., on cardstock mounts, documenting the moments leading up to the hanging of a man named E.A. Love at Fort Meade in 1902. Each with period inscription on mount verso (fading and soiling to prints, loss to mount corners).

The Photograph Manual; A Practical Treatise, Containing the Cartes de Visite Process, and the Method of Taking Stereoscopic Pictures, Including the Albumen Process, the Dry Collodion Process, the Tannin Process, the Various Alkaline Toning Baths, Etc. Etc. New York: D. Appleton & Co., 1862 (wear to covers, text overall good with occasional spotting). FFEP with faint penciled notation "J.R.H., Columbia, Cal.," suggesting that the title may have belonged to John Ross Hicks, who was a photographer (as per consignor's notes). -- Ayres, George B. How to Paint Photographs in Water Colors and in Oil. How to Work in Crayon, Make the Chromo-Photograph, Retouch Negatives, and Instructions in Ceramic Painting. New York: Daniel Appleton & Co., 1878 (occasional staining and wear to covers, text overall good with occasional spotting throughout).
