A classic Southern California stoneware storage crock produced by the J.A. Bauer Pottery Company of Los Angeles, retaining its original fitted cover. Executed in buff-colored salt-glazed stoneware, the cylindrical form is decorated with a cobalt blue hand-painted "2" denoting its two-gallon capacity, above the impressed and cobalt-stamped J.A. Bauer Pottery Co., Los Angeles maker's mark. Founded in the late nineteenth century, J.A. Bauer became one of California's most respected pottery manufacturers, producing durable utilitarian wares prized today for their honest craftsmanship and regional significance. This example represents the firm's early domestic stoneware production, intended for preserving and storing foodstuffs while offering the restrained aesthetic characteristic of American utilitarian pottery. An increasingly desirable example of early California stoneware, well suited for collectors of Bauer pottery, American advertising stoneware, and country kitchen antiques.

  • Provenance: Private Collection.
  • Literature: See Jo Lauria and Annette Corcoran, *California Pottery: From Missions to Modernism*, for discussion of J.A. Bauer Pottery Company and its utilitarian stoneware production.
  • Circa: Early 20th Century, circa 1910–1930.
  • Condition: Overall good antique condition. The crock retains its original cover. A stable vertical hairline crack extends from the rim downward on the front of the body. Minor edge wear, scattered firing imperfections, surface staining, and expected wear from age and use. The cover exhibits light wear and small edge abrasions consistent with use. No other significant losses observed.
