PURPLE HEART ISSUED TO A GASSING VICTIM,
Purple Heart awarded to Pvt. John R. Barard, Co. l, 312th Infatry Regiment, nicely engraved with his name in balck on reverse but protective layer over purple field on obverse lifting slightly, lacking ribbon. Barard was born in Montreal in 1896 and moved to Cohoes, NY. He served in the 312th Infantry and was gassed on Oct. 24, 1918 at Limey in the Meuse-Argonne region. He was discharged on May 31, 1919. The 312th originally saw heavy combat during World War I as part of the 78th 'Lightning' Division. Nicknamed 'Newark's Own,' the regiment fought in the Lorraine, St. Mihiel, and the decisive Meuse-Argonne campaigns. In October 1918 the regiment was faced with gas attacks on a daily basis.
