Catalogue note: Hank Laventhol was an American painter and printmaker known for his surrealist aquatint etchings. Born in Philadelphia, Laventhol earned a degree in Fine Arts from Yale University and later studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, Italy. Though initially trained as a sculptor, Laventhol committed himself to making two-dimensional art in 1961. He had four solo shows in London and one-man-exhibitions in Paris, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Düsseldorf, Brussels, Florence, Zürich, Lausanne and Barcelona. He spent the majority of his career working in Europe (living in Mallorca) and owned two etching presses. Collections: National Gallery of Art, Washington DC; Yale University Art Gallery; Nasher Museum of Art, University of North Carolina; Blanton Museum of Art, University of Texas at Austin.
