MEMORIAL "A DAUGHTERS TRIBUTE TO THE MEMORY OF HER BELOVED FATHER"

Depicts five mournful figures, one a girl with a long black veil obscuring her face, gathered around a memorial monument inscribed "In Memory of Dr. A. Aaron Hosford, who died April 7th AD 1804, in the 57th year of his age. The sleeping dust shall arise, and believing friends unite to part no more.". Monument, draped in black swags and a floral garland, is nestled within an arch formed by a willow and an oak tree and overlooks an unconventionally busy town scene with churchyard, boaters on a pond, a prominent double-chimney house and dozens of other buildings, and several vessels sailing down the distant river. Scene enclosed within an oval bordered by leaves and angels in upper margins with banners "Christ our ransom died.", "There is rest in Heaven." and "Redeeming love soft soft soothings shed.". Unusual pinprick technique in several areas, including handkerchiefs, the woman's cap and a girl's bodice, provides a trapunto-like effect. Titled lower margin. Inscribed in ink just above title "Etty Hosford, Gt. Barrington, A.D. 1810.".

  • Provenance:
Marguerite Riordan, Stonington, Connecticut, August 31, 1996.
The Collection of Nancy & Larry Dickson.

    Reference:
This work has been attributed by Betty Ring to a school in western Massachusetts, name unknown. Copies of her August 27, 1996 and February 10, 1997 letters to Marguerite Riordan discussing the attribution are included with the lot. A needlework attributed to the same school is illustrated in Ring's Girlhood Embroidery: American Samplers & Pictorial Needlework 1650-1850 (N.Y.: Alfred A Knopf, 1993), Vol. I, p. 17, fig. 17, and is part of the Minneapolis Institute of Art collection.

A watercolor and ink memorial with similar composition of an oval vignette bordered by leaves and angels and a similar scene of mourners gathered at monument in a relatively busy landscape, accented with pinpricking, is illustrated in American Folk Paintings: Paintings and Drawings Other Than Portraits from the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Center, p. 420, fig. 369.

    Illustrated:
"Antiquing in Connecticut en Route to Manchester, New Hampshire" by Lita Solis-Cohen, Maine Antique Digest, October 1996, p. 32B, attributed to a Hartford, Connecticut school.

    Notes:
Genealogical research indicates Dr. Aaron Hosford 1747-1804) was born in Hebron, Connecticut, and died in Wethersfield, Connecticut. He married Esther Hull (1751-1828), daughter of Dr. Isaac and Mary (Moss or Morse) Hull, in Guilford. The couple and four of their children are buried in the same cemetery in Rocky Hill.

Dr. Hosford studied medicine with his father-in-law, Isaac Hull. By the early 1770s, Hosford seems to have settled permanently in Wethersfield, where he was listed in the 1790 census and where the births of five of his children are listed in town records. The couple had seven children: Aaron (b. 1772); Joel (died in infancy and buried in the Rocky Hill cemetery); Clarissa (b. 1777); Esther (b. 1779, never married and buried in the Rocky Hill cemetery); Joel Hull (1784-1786 and buried in Rocky Hill cemetery); Othniel (b. 1787); and Harley (b. 1791).
