Native American, Mississippian culture, ca. 900 to 1600 CE. A hand-built jar of dark gray-brown ware, its body flattened into a broad discoid form and surmounted by a short, straight-sided neck with everted rim, distills the Mississippian ceramic tradition to its most functional essentials. The surface is undecorated, its tonal variation from charcoal gray to warm brown the natural consequence of open or pit firing rather than deliberate ornament. Vessels of this utilitarian profile served domestic purposes across Mississippian settlements, used for storage, cooking, or transport, their plain competence as telling a document of daily life as any effigy bowl. Size: 6.5" D x 4.6" H (16.5 cm D x 11.7 cm H)

Provenance: private Colorado, USA Collection; ex-private Denver, Colorado, USA collection; ex-private Flushing, New York and Ridgeway, Colorado, USA collection
