CHARLES DREW CAHOON
Massachusetts, 1861-1951
Looking toward Station Gay Head, the life-saving station, Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts.

Signed lower right "C.D. Cahoon". Retains label for Academy Boards, New York, Boston and Chicago.

  • Provenance: Notes:
While Charles Drew Cahoon is most noted for his Cape Cod scenes, his brother Albertus was the second keeper of Station Gay Head, a historic United States Life-Saving Service (later Coast Guard) station. Albertus served as keeper from 1900 to 1911 and during that time Charles would visit him in the summers, allowing him the opportunity to paint there.

Station Gay Head, located near Gay Head Light in Aquinnah, was moved to replace Coast Guard Station Menemsha in 1952.
  • Dimensions: Oil on board, 9" x 12". Framed 14" x 17".
  • Condition: The absence of a condition report does not imply an object is free of defects. All items may have normal signs of age and wear commensurate with their age; these issues will likely not be mentioned in the condition report. Please contact Eldred's before the auction with any condition questions. Questions about condition will not be answered after purchase.
